The Methane Menace

Too often, trash will end up in a landfill. If trash goes to a landfill, it will decompose over time and produce methane gas. Landfills have systems in place to filter methane gas through pipes to go to a conversion facility where the gas is taken care of in a responsible way. However, these systems are not without their flaws and some of the methane gas is released into the atmosphere.

Methane gas is a menace. Below are some of the reasons methane gasses are bad:

  • Methane is a greenhouse gas, and it can affect the Earth’s temperature

  • Methane is said to be more powerful than carbon dioxide in terms of warming the Earth

  • Methane gas helps form ground-level ozone which is harmful to people and ecosystems

Methane gas is one reason for us all to consider the amount of waste that we produce and how we dispose of that waste. Below are some ways we can reduce the amount of waste that will go to a landfill:

  • Carefully consider what you buy

  • Recycle

  • Reduce food waste by smaller meal sizes
